Ancillary Task 1st Draft and Feedback (Digipak)

Feedback from our teacher and peers in our media class on how we can improve our digipack before the final deadline:

-The image looks good in the CD case.

-They liked the use of layers all through the digipack.

-How we highlighted the use of seasons effectively.

-The background links to the topic of nature. The background brings out the girls facial features.

-Eyes closed=mystical effect.

Don't be too wordy.
You could use swirly font, serif, kings + queens (da-font.com)

They liked the positioning of the girl in the foreground.
Name of the artist down the side of the cover.
Earthy colours=folkie
Collage of images=Indie

There was no company logo on there.
The text needs to improve.

Ancillary Task First Draft-Inside Booklet Designs

When we presented the first draft of our Digipack to our media class, I also presented my rough designs for the inside booklet. I created the inside booklet on a Publisher Publication and I recieved mixed reviews from my group, my peers and my media teacher. There constructive criticism was helpful because it would help me to improve the overall design of our digipack and inside booklet before the final deadline.

My intention for the inside booklet, is to use a various range of images ranging from daytime to evening shots to show the versatility of our actress. I have also incorporated snippets of the lyrics which was influenced by the Lungs album.

In my opinion, I could've improved the style of the writing and the colour scheme because people thought that the writing was very difficult to read and I should've used a simple font for the inside booklet and then used a significant font for the artist and brand name.

This would be the back cover of the inside booklet. The back cover has magazine reviews about the single and artist. I have actually used snippets of real reviews from various music magazines.

My intention for this page was to overlap two images to show the style and feel of our digipack.

Digipak Research

-These two pages inside the booklet show a description of all of the tracks inside the album and the booklet also contains a thank you page from Florence Welch herself.

-All of the images inside the booklet are all focused on the artist. The artist has used a different range of camera shots and angles and a different variety of situations to show how the main artist can be presented. The situations link to the genre of indie and some of the situations juxtapose each other.

-This is the back cover of the album. In the foreground there is an x-ray type image of a Lung organ with labelled numbers to show what the name of the tracks are.

-This is the front cover of the Album with the artist as the main focus lying down. It can be interpreted as an aerial view shot of her lying down.

-Her white dress can represent purity and stands out from the rest of the action in the background and foreground.

-The writing style is a constant style that is associated with the artists.

Rough Layout of our Digipak

During the planning stages of our ancillary tasks, we created a layout of what our digipack is going to look like. We thought about colour, style, the inside booklet and how it will be different to the Lungs album by Florence and the Machine.

Ideas for our front cover:

-Having an image highlighting her face and mainly her red hair.

-Having her lying down looking up at the sky in a wood.

-Having the front cover in colour or black and white.

-We would keep the front cover minimalistic by just having the image of her face. We would not have the band name or the name of the single because we want our audiences to be captivated by our image.

Ideas for our inside booklet:

-Our inside booklet, would be a folded booklet that unraveles into several pages.
-Having images from our music video with snippets from the lyrics across the top or bottom of the pages.

-A page in the booklet with all of the lyrics.

-A "Thank you" page from our artist.

-A collage of different images layed on top of each other to create the background of the pages of our booklet.

-The CD would be decorated with patterns or swirls in colours that link to our genre of indie pop.

-We would experiment with a different range of colour for our booklet such as:

-Light Blue

-Peach

-White

-Cream

-Light Green

Ideas for our back cover:

-Our back cover would have magazine comments and reviews about the song.

Ancillary Task: Digipak Research

To help us develop our own digipack, I wanted to research two different album covers from Florence + the machine to see how she keeps the same design, themes and structure of her album covers to reflect her songs and the moods that they contain. We do not want to copy her design, but we want our album cover to portray the same genre and mood that her creative have created.

Dog Days Are Over Single Cover (2008)

The designer has placed the action inside a circle with a black background. (I have done sketches and designs of our album cover uses shapes such as the circle but in my opinion it wasn't effective so instead we are using a square to place our action inside.) He has done this to show the contrast with the dullness of the black background and how earthy colours mixed with primary colours such as red and yellow stand out to the consumer. The setting in the foreground is also used in the music video and has used props from the video such as the bird cage and the different range of flowers to demonstrate how this song and music video represents the indie genre. Like our music video, the single cover uses the forest draped with leaves and logs and in the background there is some coloured flags to indicate how it links to the music video. In my opinion, the artist has thought carefully on images that will make the reader buy the single/album. For me the animals highlighted in white stand out because they are presented as animals that live in the forest and maybe the artist used the colour white to highlight them because they are animals who could disguise themselves in the background. In addition, this album cover represents the emotions and feelings from this song and it demonstrates another example of how Florence is categorised from the indie pop genre.

The original music video:

In the video, Florence is lying in a forest, when a person in a white dress comes over and blindfolds her, and leads her to a clearing, filled with eerie-looking carnival/clown dressed people. (The designer has incorporated the circus flags in the background of the album cover to link to the context of the video.) Florence stands blindfolded for a few seconds, then takes the blindfold off and runs from a different range of people. She eventually trips, and lays there as the carnival/clown people dress her like them. When they filmed this video, they only used one camera and they used Florence's relatives to play the roles of the circus people instead of hiring extras because it is cheaper.

Dog Days Are Over Single Cover (2010)

This cover was used to promote the re-release of the song with a new music video which was released in April 2010. This cover and the Lungs album cover both use a white border outline around the outside of of the main action and it works well with the black background that is a constant colour throughout the albums of Florence and the machine. Also the white writing at the top of the cover in bold/italic style shows how it is a permanent image/brand for the consumers to recognise the artist/band. (We want to make our own style of writing for our album cover producing the writing inside the booklet and we want to keep the same writing style/font throughout. But we are using this as an example to make ours appealing to our target audience.) In addition, she has used a block style of writing at the bottom of the cover to promote the name of the song. In comparison, this cover produces more brightness with the white background highlighting florence in her indie costume. This cover is plain comapred to the first album cover which has a lot going on. This one is very effeective, because again it links to the video and the style of it. The costume sticks out to the be the first thing people see when buying it or downloading it. (In ours we are going to highlight our costume in the foreground of the album cover.) In conclusion, this cover links to the genre of indie pop and art rock and focuses mainly on the singer and these two different album covers, represent different meanings but from the same song.

The Music Video:

  • In this video, Florence is dancing in a white-washed room.
  • This video also contains go-go dancers, drummers wearing tribal outfits, harpists, marching band timpanists and a gospel choir wearing white and purple.
  • The video ends with Florence standing alone in the room. Throughout the video she wears full-body white make-up with intricate clothing and vivid red eye-liner and blusher.

Peer to Peer Analysis-Blog Feedback

On Friday 7th January 2011, we were asked to get feedback from one of our peers on each others blogs. My feedback for my blog was given to me by Sophie Legge.

Strong aspects about the blog:

  • Stages of planning
  • Refers to other productions
  • Detailed posts
  • Shows constant changes through the production process.

Weak aspects about the blog:

  • Could have more consumer research
  • Lack of pictures towards the recent end of the blog.

Four things to help me improve my blog:

  • Pictures throughout.
  • More posts on costume.
  • Research group? See what people want.
  • Mention about the actor's performance.

From this positive feedback from Sophie, it shows that I have:

  • Research of Main Production task
  • Illustrations and video content
  • All key elements of the different production stages

What I don't have/What I have but I need more of:

  • Audience feedback on final product
  • Evaluation of the final production
  • References to the intertextuality of my product

New Shot To The Production

We wanted to improve our music video, so during a bank holiday weekend, our group travelled to the Lea Valley river in Hertford to film a couple more nature shots that we can incorporate into our music video. One of these shots was to drop leaves from a bridge into a river and the camera would follow the leaves down the river.

During the editing process we reversed the shot to show the leaves drifting back up instead of falling down. Using Adobe Premiere, we slowed down the speed to show how the leaves are flying up into the air. We placed this shot before the montage seuqence because this sequence is played in a fast speed.

Train Shot-Cut

This is a still image of the train shot that was placed at the beginning of our media production. During the editing process, our group have decided to cut this shot because it didn't fit the concept and style of the music video and it was the odd one out to the rest of the other shots. We were going to use this shot, because it fits in with the lyrics.

News Flash: Changes to our video.

From our feedback from our first cut and as a group, we have come to the conclusion, to not use the train sequence at the beginning of the music video because it does not tie in with the overall feel and style of our music video. We were told it looks "mechanical" and it does not fit in with our overall intention and the storyline of the indie pop song. Our first thought in the planning stage, was to use our actress (Georgia) to get off the train when it reaches the platform to signify that she does not know where to go. We wanted to play with the lyrics visually, so we came up with the idea of using a train.

Instead, we are going to use a motage of shots of the location and we are going to use cross-fades to show the transition. This fits in with our influences from pre-raephalite paintings/films (Pans Labyrinth) and films from the indie genre. (Taking Woodstock)

Maybe we could of used a train in our video, but not a normal train from our local station because visually it looks odd, tacky and out of place. Instead, to keep up with the feel and style of our video, we could of incorporated an old steam train which probably could of worked. The downside of this idea, is that it is very difficult to find an old steam train and to have permission to film on one.
